Hi I’m Michelle and I have Schizophrenia. I record schizophrenia psychosis episodes on a security camera that I have set up in my apartment. I do this to show people that schizophrenia episodes are often non-violent. I am seriously on my couch talking to myself. Not hurting anyone and not being dangerous. I might make angry faces….but I am still only sitting on my couch. I’ve gotten a lot of comments that I am hurting my dog and I should give it away and that very hurtful. The real facts are dogs are good for people with schizophrenia because they offer unconditional love and companionship. They can provide comfort and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Dogs also help establish a routine and structure, which can be beneficial for managing symptoms. Owning a dog encourages social interaction and increases opportunities for socialization. Dogs require regular exercise, promoting physical activity that has positive effects on mental health. Additionally, dogs can help individuals regulate their emotions and provide comfort during times of distress. - Michelle Hammer https://www.schizophrenic.nyc IG: https://www.Instagram.com/schizophrenic.nyc TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@schizophrenic.nyc TW: https://twitter.com/schizophrenicny TH: https://www.threads.net/@schizophrenic.nyc #mentalhealth #schizophreniaawareness #schizophrenia #schizohphreniasupport #mentalhealthadvocate #schizoaffective #psychosisawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #depressionawareness #anxietyawareness #psychology #psychologyfacts #qanda #shorts #shorts

Schizophrenia is a brutal disease. I watch my mother deteriorate inch by inch, bit by bit for 33 years. It is referred to as the longest bereavement… My mother was so gone , long gone was the mom I knew before her passing. The medication and care has improved immensely over the years. My mom was a great mother , intelligent, even brilliant . She wanted to be a lawyer RIP my dearest mother, Monica
The dog barking in the direction of her hallucination is warming my heart, he’s like “I can’t see that man you’re arguing with but if you hate him I do too!”
I had a neighbor who tried to hide this from us because she didn't want to scare my kids. But she was the sweetest lady, even though she could switch without notice and sometimes be really harsh. But I could tell it tormented her and she really just wanted connection. She always remembered my kids birthdays. Always bought them gifts, even for random reasons. Anytime she went to the store, she would ask if I needed anything. She was just super helpful and caring. She had a few episodes before finally breaking down and telling me the truth, but even before she told me, I knew those episodes had to be a mental health crisis. Her backstory is heartbreaking. Her family had pretty much abandoned her. Not gonna lie, there were times I just kept my distance because I couldn't calculate her switches and triggers and she also would push people away at times. But I hated the idea of just giving up on her entirely. We no longer live close, but I still call and check in with her. She won't answer when she's in a mood but she will always get back to me to let me know she's ok and that she appreciates me checking in. I do worry about her being alone. Edit: I appreciate all the kind words. I don't do it for praise. I legitimately worry because the closest family she has is states away and I have literally witnessed people take advantage of her or mistreat her because they didn't understand. I have an autistic son. It's not the same as schizophrenia, but it comes with the same hope that people will have the patience to understand and not mistreat you because of a diagnosis. She was always kind and considerate towards my kids. Returning that kindness is the least I can do.
I saw someone on YouTube that had schizophrenia and taught their dog to greet every person with a specific command. Whenever they couldn’t tell if something was a hallucination they’d tell their dog to greet it. If the dog ignored them they knew it wasn’t real Edit: I found the video - /shorts/0Y7I_xAKQAo?si=IxnU799SBvH_TTI_
Love that she's wearing a shirt saying not to be paranoid...
My wife has schizophrenia. Developed in at about 26yrs old out the blue. Blindsided. We had been together 6yrs at that point. It’s an absolute beast of a mental illness Takes everything from you and those who love you. Thankfully meds do help her
Hello! To answer some questions. I was diagnosed with Schizophrenia at 22. The camera is not on a tripod that I set up to record this. I have a 24/7 security camera. When I notice that I had an episode I write down the time and check the recordings later. For those who like my T-Shirt, I started my mental health advocacy by selling shirts and artwork all around New York City. Now I decided to make more videos and share them on the internet. If you want this shirt you can get it here: www.schizophrenic.nyc/shop/dont-be-paranoid-tee/
My aunt suffered from schizophrenia since her teenage but her parents were ignorant. I finally took the initiative and got her the treatment that she needed. I am extremely grateful for the doctors who treated her with all their might and now she is doing well. She is on medication but she is a working woman with a baby girl. I am proud of my country India where we have excellent doctors.
Oh my uncle has Schizophrenia. He is a doctor himself. He has it since mid 1970s and he is 73 years old now. He talks to his imaginary friends, he laughs with them, argues with, screams at them. And we are kind of used to it as we have always seen him like that. He is such a sweet innocent person. We love him so much. My cousin specially goes to his house to give him a bath, a hair cut, trim his nails. May God bless my uncle and all those suffering.
The people in the comments trying to say that schizophrenia is a “superpower” and that she’s actually communicating with “spirits” are disgusting. You clearly have no knowledge of or experience with schizophrenia and psychotic patients in general. Telling a schizophrenic person that they’re not sick and that they’re having some form of “spiritual experience” is what causes people to stop taking their medication and end up dead, homeless, jailed, hospitalised or hurting themselves or someone else😐
That is a smart dog. He can totally tell something is not right and looks like he trying to help
It crushes me. I have a baby blanket made by my mom’s best friend who had schizophrenia. She stepped in front of a train 2 days after giving it to my mom. She was so tormented and so alone, my mom tried to support her as much as she could but there wasn’t much in terms of resources in that day and age. It’s a brutal thing to work with.
My mom was schizophrenic and had a drug problem. She was recently found on a bench in Seattle, dead, after a lot more years than I thought she was gonna have. She’s genuinely in a better place.
Mental health is no joke. If you’re living with an abusive family, leave them. If you’re working a job you hate, quit it. DON’T stop yourself from living your life because worry stress and resentment build up until it bursts. Go where you are loved because this place DOES exist.
Mental illness is so hard. Its so misunderstood. I have depression and borderline and i talk to myself like this all the time because it helps me provess thought and apparently it makes me look "crazy" its just my normal behavior.
CORRECTION:My father commited suicide because of a mental illness. Take care of your loved ones and be there for them as much as you can. before the correction i used the word "disease". Forgive me for using that word to address what I meant to say. Thank you everyone. Hopefully i made things right. Once again forgive me for my mistake.
My bro has been diagnosed when he was 16 and he just hit 50 . It's not easy living with that condition. He is perfectly normal but when crisis hits its totally a different person. Thank God he hasn't had anything serious lately. Otherwise he has a heart of gold I love him so much.
I can relate to this video, my husband watched me destruct, talking to myself, full conversation with no one, I refused to believe him, I couldn't do anything, no cooking, work, balance a check book, I allowed myself to stay like her, for 5 years, in and out of Hospitals and Rehabs, I would not stay on my medications and I wasted years of my life. Today, seven years later, I realized I need medical attention for my schizophrenia , I don't ever want to be that person again, I just wanted my life back...Long road to recovery for me..
My sister passed away a few weeks ago at age 62. She developed schizophrenia at age 16. She was in total care of my parents until they passed a few years ago. She suffered terribly as did my parents and our entire family. When my parents died, we had to put her into a psychiatric facility which was a gut wrenching thing to do. She had gotten lung cancer from years of chain smoking in her room and as I mentioned, passed away a few weeks ago. By that time her appearance had long changed from being a beautiful young girl with talent and intelligence to a snarling, toothless, wild-eyed skeleton. It was impossible for her to make a coherent sentence. I still can't believe what she went through in her life and what my parents had to go through until they passed a year apart. Even though it was so hard loosing our parents, I am so grateful they didn't have to experience my sister's passing in such a terrible way. I believe it was a great mercy. Recently, one of my brothers had a dream about her. She was in Heaven - in a place of unimaginable beauty. She was also incredibly beautiful like she was before her illness but actually so much better and more radiant. She was wearing a beautiful garment which was made from all of her old pajamas but somehow it was beautiful. My brother said that everything about her looked like herself with one exception: her eyes were grey - not brown. The interesting thing is that my brother was not aware that my sister had always longed for grey eyes! I'm sorry for going on like this but the point of writing is to tell about my brother's dream. I found it very comforting and I hope you will as well. Ok, may God bless all the suffering souls!
My best friend has schizophrenia...I have few friends but he's the one who most helped me when I needed it...people use to tell me I'm crazy to give him my friendship...17 years and only saw good things from him...thanks God I didn't listen to people!
