Mental Health Awareness Month - Suicide Awareness Video 2

Cases like Brandon Mateo’s are becoming all too familiar for law enforcement officers. According to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office they identified a total 192 deaths by suicide in 2019 – six of which were minors 17-years-old and younger. In 2020 – there were 183 suicides throughout the region – two were minors. So far this year, preliminary findings (meaning – the deaths could still be under investigation) the Medical Examiner has identified 52 suicides. Four by people 17-years-old and younger. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office sends detectives to investigate suicides to ensure there has been no crime. More than a dozen WCSO personnel worked Brandon’s case from Patrol and Detectives. All have been affected by this one event.
