I am not being a hater but come on. A. Commune? Seriously? It's one thing for someone the age of Molly to think that a commune is the way to live, but this dude's in his forties. I am very much into energy and this guy gives me the major major creeps. I fear that young girls like Molly look at these older people thinking that they want to be like them. Thinking they can actually live a happy and successful and meaningful life because they think these older people have been successful at doing it. However, most older people that are part of a commune are in it because they have failed in life, are disconnected from reality or sadly have bad intentions to lure younger people into their commune. Communes as a way of living have failed consistently for a thousand years. Once again I am not a hater but not every culture is equal and not everything is as it seems on the surface.

I was loving it when Molly spoke a few Japanese words. Now I have to go back, write down what she said and Google what it meant.

Love your vibes. I’m a boomer who was for a time a “Yippie”(Youth International Party) as opposed to a Hippie. Yippies were just politically radicalized hippies. Some of us lived in communes. In my experience communes attracted idealistic hard working members (75%) verses slackers who just wanted a free ride. The slackers caused far more problems and eventually they sucked the life out of our group. At that time members of communes received the same benefits regardless of what they put into the group. The word “commune,” with the root word shared with “communism,” may have had a negative perception then, but, more importantly, it invited persons into our group who felt little need to share in the physical effort or add substantively in other ways to advance our group In contrast to the word “commune,” which denotes a collective economy, the terms “Co-Op” and “Cooperative” denotes a shared economy where individual strengths and efforts are rewarded based on the needs of the collective and the relative value the individual brings to the group. In the past, communes and co-ops failed for many reasons, mostly related to human nature, lack of clear guidelines, rules and accountability and lax or non-existing enforcement. Thanks. Mad Man Mike

That commune idea sounds awesome…I would love to visit to check it out some time…soak in the positive energy. Surrounding yourself with the right people in the right environment is really important.

There’s an old newspaper maxim: “If it bleeds it leads.” Soft human interest stories are often relegated to the back pages. I agree with Molly. Rather than desiring a malicious joy, I think most of us want to see that our setbacks and sufferings are not unique. We instantly identify with, and in some ways come to terms with, our own messed up lives. It is like a free instant therapy session. There may also be a biological evolutionary process at work. By observing others’ negative experiences we might learn to avoid a similar situation down the road.
