The birds don't sing, they screech in pain.

This video is of Werner Herzog in the film "Burden of Dreams." This film is a documentary about the making of Herzog's 1982 film "Fitzcarraldo," which is set in the Peruvian Amazon and is about a rubber baron attempting to portage a steamship to access a new area to exploit the rubber trees. Herzog actually makes this same portage attempt, and around the one hour and 20-minute mark in the documentary, where the filmmakers are realizing this attempt is bound to fail, Herzog is essentially prompted by Director Les Blank to recount an off-camera monologue. It's a famous quote that I find both hilarious and true (especially after conducting remote biodiversity survey fieldwork in the Peruvian Amazon) and I wanted to edit it for concision and post it here for your viewing pleasure.
