Sponsor: Thermaltake TR200 WS mATX Case on Amazon https://geni.us/bviRvG We used The FloW's softmod, among other tools, to install Linux on a Sony PlayStation 5. The process involves jailbreaking the PS5 to softmod it with Linux. Our lawyers tell us that we can make this video, but console makers are historically very "sensitive" (read: overbearing, sometimes to illegality and settlements) with regards to people doing what they want with hardware they bought and own. This mod allowed us to overclock the PS5, adjust the fan curves, install Steam, and even play Halo: Combat Evolved on the PS5 with Linux. Ubuntu, Arch, and Alpine are all supported payloads right now. The best way to support our work is through our store: https://store.gamersnexus.net/ Like our content? I was here before the Sony Lawyers saw this and acted!
You know it’s a prison planet when anything worth having is a “jailbreak”.
"If you own the god damned hardware, you should be able to do whatever you want with it." A lot of tech CEO's just did a spit take hearing this statement.
it's crazy that you even have to consult a legal team to make a video about using hardware you paid for as you want
Spreading of the Penguin will continue until morale improves. I've already downloaded mint cinnamon last night to dual boot. I expect to fully migrate by the end of this year
Amusing to see the GN Team learn about and develop the shared hatred for Snaps that most of the rest of us already have
Maybe interesting: I saw a PS5 firmware archive and it's possible to update PS5 firmware over USB.
Extra info: Some commenters are saying older firmware is available online. For *reasons* we can't really get into the details on that, but *other* people are saying older firmware is available online. We also recently 3D printed Noctua fans. Check that out too: /watch?v=_t3tEQmCl-M And our Tryx FLOVA case review: /watch?v=_viuFhMwyZo
The PlayStation: "What is this feeling? I've never felt it." Linux and Steam: "Freedom, my boy."
Jon Bringus looking extra fabulous today.
A lot of people don't know it, but theflow0 was like one of the most important people in PS Vita hacking scene.
Linux and Linux community is on a SPEED RUN right now, Steam decks, steam OS, steam machine.....
Comparing Ubuntu to Windows is the sickest burn the Ubuntu devs could have gotten.
I remember working at Dave and Busters in the 2010's and we had some arcade games from Namco that ran the Namco System 357. It was based on the PS3 (literally used the mobo from a fat ps3) and ran Linux. So cool to see this unexpected pairing still living on in 2026!
"Master Chief, mind telling me what you're doing on that PlayStation?" "Sir, finishing this console war"
I'm sorry but it's quite funny watching Steve internally seethe while using and explaining Ubuntu. Now you understand why a lot of us hated Ubuntu and don't really want to recommend it to new people. Snap is like more than half the reasons for bullshit problem that you don't usually encounter in other distro.
When the IRS asks you for proof of the PS5 being used for business purposes...
i bet the stuttering and slow load times are because everything is running off the slow ass USB connection
Snap hate continues! Yes!
The Flow contribution to the playstation homebrew scene is legendary, bless that man
