Explaining Why We’re Seeing More Crocodile Sightings in Singapore

Nature and animals

The Blue Cats’ website: https://www.thebluecats.com.sg/ The Blue Cats' Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/singaporethebluecats/ -------- A crocodile was spotted in the waters off Sentosa Cove on Wednesday evening, 6 May. NParks and Sentosa Development Corporation activated a joint search team, while water activities such as swimming and kayaking were suspended at Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong Beach until further notice. The beaches remain open, but people should stay out of the water and follow safety signs. This is the second reported crocodile sighting at Sentosa in 2026. The first was on 31 January, also at Sentosa Cove, and water activities resumed on 8 February after no further sightings. Other reported sightings in 2026 included Marina South Pier on 1 February, Changi Naval Base on 3 February, multiple sightings around Pulau Ubin from March to April, Keppel Bay on 29 April, and the latest Sentosa Cove case. Crocodiles are not suddenly invading Singapore. They have always been here, but sightings may seem more common because more people visit nature areas, more people carry smartphones, and social media spreads sightings quickly. The species found here is the Estuarine Crocodile, also known as the Saltwater Crocodile, which is native to Singapore and can grow up to 6 to 7 metres long. These crocodiles usually live in mangroves, coastal areas and brackish waters such as the Straits of Johor and Singapore Strait. They can swim long distances, which is why they may occasionally appear in places like Sentosa, Marina South, East Coast Park or even on land. Anyone who sees one should stay calm, back away slowly, avoid approaching, provoking or feeding it, and call NParks Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600.

Crocodile sighting here and there bla bla bla, maybe because they are native here and have been for thousands of years?

I remember dogs getting taken by crocodiles back in the early 1980s when I used to live in Seletar. Not only that, there were ginormous large pythons also going after dogs and pigs. Yes, Seletar and Punggol had many pig farms back in the day. I remember one night driving in the back roads behind Jalan Kayu one night at 2am, going to steal durian and jackfruit from the kampong. On that night there was a log across the road, and you could see either ends. The log turned out to be a giant python. The car went over the log and the “log” and the log wriggles violently that it threw the car off balance and we nearly ended up in the longkang; and if we ended up in the longkang, I’m quite sure we’d have ended up in the python’s belly.

Wah, so this is the same type of crocodile the late Steve Irwins had been tackling long long time ago? It took 5 adults to capture one of these alive from memory of the show.
