I've always gone for around 4 hours before ever since I nearly got stuck in another country despite being 2 HOURS early. The queue was veryyyyy long and security was being difficult ( the whole filthy tourist treatment)

It's better to be early than late when I was going on holiday with my family. Going to the airport and waiting for the flight was fun. There's lots of things to do in the airport and It prepares you for the holiday. The excitement builds after plane gets ready for the departure. If you turn it half an hour before the flight departures, you're cutting it very fine and I hate being in a rush. I'd rather turn up 2 hours early and relax and enjoy the time before the flight. Knowing that you've done all the boarding and checking before the flight boards and gates open as they say better to be early than late
