This was a historical remembrance of millions of deaths in WWII from the USSR. The USSR is no longer in existence, so why is there an issue commemorating with symbols of the country that fought the Nazis and lost more citizens than any other nation.

In September 2025, Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative-designate for Foreign Affairs, sparked considerable debate with remarks regarding Russia’s role in the Second World War. She characterized the narrative—that Russia and China won the Second World War and defeated fascism—as a "new" and "questionable narrative." Kallas warns that Russia is using history to justify its current actions and to sow division within the West. MEP Fabio De Masi, of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), submitted a written inquiry to Kallas, seeking to know whether she truly held the view that the Soviet Union and China had made no contribution to the victory over Nazi Germany. In her response—which has been obtained by the *Berliner Zeitung*—Kallas emphasizes that the EU honors "all sacrifices made to bring the Second World War to an end." This includes "the courage of the people of China, who endured immense suffering while defending their homeland and contributing to the conclusion of the war." However, it is striking that Kallas leaves the Soviet contribution to the victory over fascism entirely unmentioned. Neither the Battle of Stalingrad, nor the liberation of vast swathes of Europe and of concentration camps by the Red Army, nor the more than 27 million Soviet citizens killed—including many Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Balts—receive any mention.
Even in Germany, there were thousands of people who suffered under Nazi rule, with whom they disagreed and were executed. Descendants have honored the memory of both Russian and German anti-fascist fighters.
