The King family has said for decades that Ray did not do the crime, that it was an act of state. Dexter King met with Ray in prison and accepted his declaration of innocence. Ray never had a trial, he was pressured into making a guilty verdict (to avoid the electric chair) and immediately realized he had made a mistake. The King family asked their close friend William Pepper to help with their investigations and later, Pepper represented Ray in his unsuccessful effort to get a trial before Ray died in prison. In 1999, the King family filed a lawsuit in Memphis against one of the minor conspirators, Lloyd Jowers, and the three weeks of testimony in the trial is compelling. It's also twenty seven hundred pages in the transcript. I read most of them years ago and found it very convincing. Not a "theory." After MLK was killed, Ray managed to use aliases in Canada of people who superficially resembled him, which would have required access to government databases. Ray was a small time criminal, and holding up liquor stores would not give him this ability. MLK was martyred because he was connecting the dots between civil rights, the war on Vietnam, imperialism and economic injustice.
Martin Luther King was a walking target and he knew that every second of his life yet he did not waiver...there is no greater courage than that..
It's too bad this PBS America documentary includes the musings of the plagiarist Gerald Posner. What Posner doesn't know, (which is a lot) he fabricates. It's amazing that Posner knew what JE Ray was always thinking...Just like he knew what LH Oswald was always thinking. And in both cases, according to Posner, all these 2 assassins wanted, was fame.

The first time I seen civil rights marches I was just a youngfella 15 years old came up from Dublin to visit aunt and get some washing powder Derry 1972 about 2 thousand innocent Irish men,women who had lost everything august 1969 catholic homes,cathedral had been burned down January 1st 1971 internment became law thousands Catholics had been dragged from homes held hostage in cages in death camps that covered Northern Ireland I was standing with a group youngfellas watching British special forces setting up the machine guns about 25/35 foot from civilians then started shootings into crowds 13 people & 1 priests died straight away the unlucky ones had arms,legs shot off this became known as Bloody Sunday for catholics it was Bloody Sunday 7 days a week for 31 years even after GFA Catholic were still getting shot 1998 being catholic was a crime for English royal family
An interesting documentary. I was in my 20s & early 30s during this time & remember it well.
The assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968 was as catastrophic for America as the assassination of JFK in 1963.....King wanted people to talk about the gospels because he said he got tired of talking about black and white!
