There's also small submarines that Iran operates in that area! I'm sure they can deploy both mines and torpedoes!
Would we let Iran into the Gulf of Mexico after they attacked us and killed 170 school aged children? Absolutely not!
While the strait is 21 miles, the actual channel ships can sail through is much smaller than. Any deviation outside this area, risks hitting a sandbar or worse.
And then there's the obvious solution : stop doing war to them.
