Knockout drops: colorless, tasteless and extremely dangerous. They’ve been around for decades and are used to incapacitate people in order to rob, rape and even kill them. "Spiking" is adding a sedative substance to people's food and drink without their knowledge or consent. The victim is rendered completely helpless and often suffers memory blackout - and crimes go unreported. "I didn't know why, but I knew something bad had happened," says Kate, recalling the night she was "knocked out". The following day, she realized she had been raped. Lawyer Jochen Link from the German organization Weißer Ring, which supports victims of crime, warns that the extent of the problem is being underestimated. Time and again, victims report blackouts even though they have consumed very little alcohol. The range of substances used is wide - from party drugs to sedatives and sleeping pills. Many victims feel ashamed or afraid that they won't be taken seriously. Nina, who reported a rape, describes it this way: "Right from the start, I felt I wouldn't be believed." Despite evidence being found, her case never went to trial. Detection remains extremely difficult, partly because once ingested, many substances are quickly broken down by the body. Researchers at Charité University Hospital in Berlin are therefore investigating the substances most found in spiking cases. What all documented cases have in common is the experience of loss of control. "The memory gaps are hard to bear," explains one expert - especially when those affected have experienced sexual violence. Victims' lawyer Link also calls for more than just tougher penalties: "We as a society need to work on this. I’ve been roofied before, and I know of a friend of a friend who was allegedly drugged with burundanga in South Beach. The woman stole his Rolex and his clothes. I’ve also heard stories about married couples being roofied during nights out and the women being assaulted. Watch your drinks.

Sometimes people don't even know for sure what was used. Around 2016 I think my drink was 'spiked'. I went to a concert place, I had only one small beer (around 200ml with less then 4% of alcohol).There was so much people at this place, that I covered all my cup with my hand and put it in front of me, but unfortunately I think who ever did it, was serving or immediately on top of the bar. I had an experience similar to the first girl. It wasn't the alcohol, it was something else. I noticed and try to ask for help to a security and he didn't help me and said I couldn't be near to the security area. It was so difficult to talk that I didn't call the police. Please give directions to people that can be on this situations, I was aware of the situation and I couldn't even do something about it 😢😞
People are horrible to other people. The world is full of sick cruel people. My heart breaks for the victims. May they find peace ... and justice.
To do that to a 14-year-old child is sickening. I'm glad she got to live and tell her story, I hope those men were jailed.

I was roofied at a bar by the bartender in Bristol Connecticut called Paris 's, it's closed now thankfully. The bartender kept giving me free drinks and my roommate noticed I was way more fkd than normal, I just left, walked home didn't tell anyone, something inside just told me to flee and I'm so glad I did

I'm from the UK, and went to uni in the late 2000s and it was rife in uni/student culture. The misogyny and rape culture was terrible and the uni didn't care, plus in the UK there is a 1% conviction rate for r*pe. So it's effectively legal. Plus slut shaming was rife, so often women stay silent.
This world is hell.

In my teens I love to dance until I run out of energy, but I stopped going to night clubs in my middle 20's, once I realized that many of these clubs are used to sell drugs, money laundering and the worst, rap!$t targeting women of all ages to take them somewhere, many of these businesses are owned by shady characters. I realized that it wasn't worth my time or money going to these places full of broken souls. Now, I'm on my 50's, no regrets a bit.
Yet reporting immigrants that do it is racist.

This happens a lot to gay men as well especially at the gay bars and even bathhouses. It’s happening enough that it is one of my top concerns trying to go out and explore the gay scene or date. One reason in addition to my own health issues why I bring a ton of water and drinks for me when I go out so if I think I’ve been roophied I can flush out my system ASAP
Slipping a Micky Fin into someone's drink is despicable behaviour and should carry a long sentence in jail..
