No, no, no! "Be the bigger person" is the phrase people use to put others below them. It says "I refuse to change so you have to for this to be fixed even though I am wrong and won't admit it." Every person who has had to be the bigger person has been steamrolled in the end and good for him for standing up. Just because she is sick now doesn't mean he has to forgive and forget her mistreatment of him. His home is his sanctuary and he has a right to lay down rules. He has not forbidden his girlfriend from seeing her family or spending time with them nor has he cut them off. He has laid out a boundary that says, "act how you like but until there is an apology, my home is off limits." Nothing in that hurts the in laws except maybe their pride. Letting something go should never be done to keep the peace but because you are ready to do so for your own sake.

I tend to really like your opinions. I think you are thoughtful, and I like your analysis and self analysis. It's a big part of change and personal growth, which I think is needed. The Dad kicking out the child was completely wrong, but the son deciding to give him a second chance should be supported in his decision. It is rare to see someone come around like that. I hope he genuinely means it, because mind blown on that level of change.

I actually got really angry when you told the story about the religious father. It sounds like you haven't been through that much hardship in life. I would have loved to get that letter. To feel like family don't love you is hard. Also, sound like you haven't been around people brainwashed by religion. Or know that much about it. You know that religion was used to start most wars?

I am conservative and religious, and I would never treat my son that way because he is gay. Or any other person for that matter. People's preferences are theirs alone, and I would love him and help him through the rough times, no matter what. Real parental love is unconditional. He is blaming his religion for his terrible choices as a father.

Re: the atheist father's story, so-called Christians like this infuriate me. They've missed the whole point of their religion. How many times did Jesus tell His people that our job is to simply love one another, and to leave judgment to him? Who did Jesus hang out with? It wasn't the self-righteous pricks who found fault with everyone except themselves, but the sinners, the sick, the poor and downtrodden. Hate has absolutely no place in Christianity, and the ability to hate your own child is something I cannot even fathom. And then when you tack on, "Oh, by the way, your mother died 9 years ago. Sorry for not passing that memo along a bit sooner," it becomes a betrayal that only Christ himself might have the strength to forgive.
