Relationship Advice on YouTube Is Missing Something Critical
Master nervous system regulation to heal emotional dysregulation in relationships. Learn why communication tools fail when your body takes over. In this video, I’m getting vulnerable about a recent disagreement to show you why most relationship advice on YouTube misses the mark. As a relationship therapist, I’ve spent years teaching "I feel" statements and attachment theory, but I realized something crucial during my own conflict: all that intellectual work is irrelevant if your nervous system isn't regulated. When we are in a state of high emotion, it isn't a brain-to-brain interaction; it is your nervous system interacting with your partner's. I’ll admit, I’m a "master intellectualizer". I often fall into the trap of thinking that if I just think hard enough, I can solve any emotional problem. But emotions are ten times faster than thoughts. If you try to think your way out of a visceral, biological "fight or flight" response, you’ve lost the race before it even begins. It’s like trying to hit a home run with a wiffle ball—you can put in all the effort in the world and still never get the result you want. I also share how I use intentional activities—like lifting dumbbells at the gym or practicing mindfulness—to engage the mind, body, and spirit for better regulation. Plus, I’m excited to announce the Coffee Cup Mindfulness Podcast, launching in May 2026, to give you a daily "sip" of regulation every morning.
