The younger generation has no idea how big this guy was. 60-70 million people bought this album. Went out and actually purchased a physical copy. They sold that replica jacket….they sold his glove. Biggest superstar I’ve seen and I’m 55. He hit at the perfect time like MJ with cable TV spreading everywhere snd MTV propelled him to crazy heights.

MJ hired actual LA gangs to perform in this video. The guitar solo was uncredited, but it was Eddie Van Halen, who replaced previous work done on it and Michael Jackson loved it so much he left it in! Eddie never thought the single would be as big as it was and got grief from his band for doing the job for free! I was 15 years old and touring the state of KY with my Church's Teen Bible Quizzing Team from 1983-1986, so on long van rides across the state, one of the other teens had a boom box, and Michael Jackson's Thriller Album, so I know EVERY SONG from listening to the album on cassette repeat hour after hour!
Now imagine being a kid or teen in the 80s and watching this on MTV for the first time. He was basically like a musical superhero.
MJ was truly unique. His music doesn't resemble anything else really. Truly a genius.
Eddie Van Halen played the solo.He did it with no pay.Eddie did get two 6 packs of beer from it. When the other members of Van Halen finally heard about they goofed on him for not asking to be paid. On one of Michael Jackson's tour.Eddie did come & play it live The best rock story,involving Eddie, was when Dimebag Darrell died Eddie brought his yellow & black bumble bee guitar,he played on Van Halen II.He told Dimebag's girlfriend "an original should have an original."
I was a teenager working in a grocery store when this came out. I was a rocker, not a MJ fan, but I remember mopping the floor at work, getting ready to close. This song came on, I was ignoring it mostly, but then the guitar solo started. I stopped in my tracks and thought "Is that Eddie Van Halen?" Of course, we didn't have internet then, so it took me days to confirm that indeed that was THE EVH on a Michael Jackson song. Blew my mind
