One of the most dramatic moments I have ever witnessed in football was when Christian Eriksen collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest during Denmark’s match against Finland at UEFA Euro 2020 (played in June 2021). The Danish players immediately formed a protective shield around him to block the television cameras while Eriksen received first aid and CPR on the pitch. Denmark’s captain, Simon Kjær, was among the first to react — helping place Eriksen in the recovery position and organizing teammates to protect him. He also went to comfort Eriksen’s partner. After Eriksen was stabilized and taken to hospital, UEFA decided the match would be completed later the same evening. The Danish players agreed to resume, although several later said they felt they had little real choice given the circumstances. Finland won the match 1–0. The Finnish supporters showed strong respect and support for Eriksen, and there was also visible sportsmanship from Finnish players during the incident. Eriksen later received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and remarkably continued his professional career with Brentford and later Manchester United. As of recent seasons, he has remained an active professional player. Eriksen has been a superb footballer — a key figure for both the Danish national team and Tottenham Hotspur during his peak years. It is worth noting that the earlier injury involving Andy Carroll (2016) did sideline Eriksen for a period and Eriksen has not been the same player after that
