Something to check. You are missing the block plate for the blow proof bell housing. Its pretty thick and moves the whole trans assembly rearwards. This may be what is throwing everything off and made it hard to get the transmission fully seated. Make sure the trans nose is not bottomed out in the crank or it will kill the thrust bearing.

Tom! You can use a late model starter off of a 1995 dodge dakota it is half the size and spins twice as fast. They bolt right up to LA blocks. You can also find a 1994-2002 ram with a 5.2 or 5.9 magnum and install it in the car and they come factory with a roller cam. Just have to install a carb intake. The distributor from the 318 340 360 also drops in the magnum block. To use a magnum in an abody youll need to use a 360 LA oil pan!
