Variable aperture absolutely does not mean that the lens can let it more light. It means it can be adjusted to let in less light. All the previous iPhones have had their aperture fixed to the maximum. This one will just be able to close smaller than the maximum

Just because the aperture is variable doesn’t mean they’re gong to let more light in. iPhones already have their lenses tuned to maximum fixed aperture.
I remember my Samsung Galaxy note 9 from 2018 had variable aperture...
