I ve worked in a medical setting for over 30 years and this is very true. However I must admit that some of these cases of men being bitten above the waist have been due to occupation. One of the worst snake bites I ve ever seen in the ER was a gentleman who worked for Bell South which was a phone company back when land lines were the norm. He was trying to find an issue with a customer’s phone line and was on a ladder when a snake came from a gutter and bit him multiple times in the face. Another was a gentlemen working to fix and HvAC problem and accessed the crawl space under the customers home. He accidentally disturbed a rattler’s nest and was bitten multiple times in the face, neck, shoulder and hand.

Men are not only bitten from the chest up. I know quite a few men which have been bitten on the ankle/ lower leg.

As a surgical ICU RN a man came in through the ER after being bitten by a baby rattlesnake on his upper arm 3 days before coming in. He only came in because the pain was excruciating and infection was moving up the arm. The bite area had necrosis under the skin and a good part of his upper arm muscle had to be removed. He kept saying, "But it was just a baby rattler!"
