True story about Bert Trautmann! German prisoner of war who made 508 appearances for Man City. In 1953 he met with the then West German Manager, Sepp Herberger who explained that travel and political implications prevented him from selecting a player not readily available meaning Trautmann must move and play in Germany to be considered for the West German 1954 World Cup squad (which they we on to won). Bert refused because he'd married and started a family in England so never played for Germany despite being recognised as the best German goalkeeper of the period! God bless Bert!
