COD still has a big audience because it's entry level is stupidly low. The bar is so low that any Jonni on a couch can play it effortlessly, brainlessly, and successfully. From an interaction, you'd never see a difference between the same random Jonni and skillful player because there's no skill required or intended. And another reason of it's popularity is, of course, the huge money drops Infinity Ward and Raven Software put into marketing and social media, buying content creators and, as a result, their viewers. The whole IP is literally hanging on its trademark and money.
