when i was cutting cups for our local club, we had a cup setter with a bubble level in it and that piece of kit alone made all of the difference in a straight pin. when the cup goes in, if its not plumb, the pin sits crooked, and its VERY easy to mess up if your greens have angulation... btw i typed this before he had the hole painted. not surprised to see a crooked pin

When i did cupping 45 years ago I started my lunge into the ground from about eye high, had to go in perfectly straight. Contraption went maybe half way in. Then start toggling side to side to get in deeper to the correct depth. Then pull it out without taking the turf with it. Go to old hole and sink plug to perfect length, slightly protruding above the green. Sprinkle some dirt on top and stomp it down. My cupping was always par excellence!
