He should’ve been able to read them backwards better they actually believe part of dyslexia is a different directional system of the brain EDIT: I apologize for quickly writing this comment without much thought about how this stereotype may be harmful. I’m dyslexic, and I remember my pediatrician asking me to read things backwards when I was younger, and I actually found it easier. I know that’s a stereotype, and I’m not saying every dyslexic person reads backwards better. Dyslexia obviously isn’t black and white, and I’m not always better at reading that way either, but with letters specifically, I probably would be. The spatial and directional part is what makes this make sense to me. I was told when I was younger that dyslexia can involve differences in how the brain processes direction and spatial information. I also genuinely get things backwards or out of order a lot. I’ll sometimes add when I’m supposed to subtract, or I’ll remember someone’s phone number really well but put the numbers in the wrong order. I can remember the individual information, but the sequence or direction can get mixed up. I’m also somewhat ambidextrous, which is another thing I was told could be common with dyslexia. There is research looking at dyslexia and mirror-image processing, visual-spatial processing, handedness, and brain lateralization, so I don’t think the idea came completely out of nowhere. There are even studies where dyslexic children performed better on certain mirror-image judgments. Obviously, none of this means every dyslexic person experiences dyslexia the same way, and I’m not saying these things are diagnostic. I’m using myself as an example because these are genuinely things I experience. So when dyslexia in media involves symptoms or differences in spatial awareness, direction, sequencing, & how the brain organizes visual information, I can personally relate to that. I think “dyslexics read backwards better” is an oversimplified stereotype, but I can also personally understand where that stereotype may have come from.
