For those who don't know: this was Aloysius Anthony "Shipwreck" Kelly (1893โ1952), a famous American stuntman credited with popularizing the flagpole-sitting trend in the 1920s and 1930s. โDuring the Roaring Twenties, Kelly gained national fame by perching atop tiny platforms mounted on flagpoles for weeks at a time, earning money from public appearances, endorsements, and crowd tickets. His most famous stunt took place in 1930, when he sat atop a 225-foot pole on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, for 49 days and 1 hour setting a world record. โHowever, as the Great Depression hit, interest in flagpole sitting faded. By October 1952, a penniless and forgotten 59-year-old Kelly tried one final comeback stunt in Texas, but suffered two heart attacks on the pole and was forced down. Just days later, on October 11, 1952, he was fatally struck by a car while walking in New York City, holding a scrapbook titled "The Luckiest Fool on Earth" containing clips of his past glory.
I JUST REALIZED WHY DID BRO CLIMB LIKE THAT?๐พ๐ฝ๐พ๐ฝ๐พ
For those who donโt know, Aloysius "Shipwreck" Kelly was a famous 1920s American stuntman who became a national celebrity by inventing the bizarre fad of flagpole sitting. A former sailor and steelworker, Kelly sparked a massive nationwide craze in 1924 after sitting atop a Hollywood theater flagpole for over 13 hours as a movie publicity stunt. Over his career, he spent more than 20,000 hours perched on tiny platforms high in the air, setting his ultimate record in 1930 by surviving atop an Atlantic City flagpole for 49 consecutive days while sleeping upright and receiving food hoisted up in buckets by ground crews.
