As an American it is strange (in a good way) to hear countries trying to rehabilitate criminals instead of punish them, break their spirit, and push them in a cycle of repeat offending because a jail sentence, especially a felony, is basically a sign that says "even if you have a masters degree, you are stuck in an entry level job with no chance of promotion." (I had a coworker at Walmart who had that situation. He had a masters degree, experience, but some random felony from like 15 years earlier meant walmart would never promote him, he couldn't get a job in his field, and he was spending a lot of money trying to get the felony expunged because it was his only way to move forward in life. I lost contact with him and don't know if he ever got it expunged and improved his life.)
