Display Port (a royalty free and open standard) exists but the problem is that HDMI has essentially a monopoly on entertainment media devices like TVs... And functionally the Steam Machine is a console to _use_ such devices, so display port is not a given. And HDMI 2.1 is required in order to use _all_ features of a capable 4k TV at the same time with no compromises. HDMI Forum's royalties and proprietary control of its required drivers is not fair.

Yeah, I did not know this was a thing until a couple of years back, I was already using Linux and after finding out I just started using display port and called it a day
