It will only destroy itself if it's an interference engine meaning if the cam gets far enough out of time, the Pistons will hit the valves.
I would make 2 complete revolutions of the crank. 4 stroke remember
Pro tip: If it's off by one tooth chances are its gonna run a little rough no matter how you set the distributor, or timing playboy. Wouldn't damage much at all. If its more than 4 teeth off (most engines) chances are your gonna bend/snap a valve. It is so hard to slip more than one tooth unless your chain/belt is playdoh.
