Amp Sims are Dead

NAM is awesome. And it's only available because Steve Atkinson decided very altruistically to release it free and totally open source. He's a hero. And it sounds great. Tone3000 is a godsend.

As a computer engineer and a musician it's always baffled me the lengths that some guitar players will go to promote their their stupid ideas about tonality and sound. In the words of Yngwie Malmsteen if it sounds good then it's good. It took a while but I've dialed in a killer fucking tone on my GX100 for studio and live performances. I've had many people compliment my tone saying how fat and rich it was and had the other musicians stare at my board going that's all you're doing?? Use your ears guys.

In 1997, I helped a studio in Hollywood upgrade to Pro Tools, and my album was the first recorded there with the new system. They went to West LA Music and got Pro Tools, a Pro Tools "CORE" machine, and an 888 I/O, for approximately $30,000. The times sure have changed.

To me, buying the Quad cortex is probably the best thing I have ever done. The practical usability is so so great. Having XLR inputs we can run an entire acoustic set with two Guitars and two vocals through the QC, doing all of the processing, getting the best acoustic sound I have ever lined etc. In my band with original music we can put three different instruments through it, sax, guitar and violin. Creating for us unique sounds that are both manageable and replicable live. It's not always about the tones. Sure, it does sound fantastic, but so does many other options. But what I do know is that it has saved our asses more times than I can count, it is an integral part of my work as a giging musician, the build quality of the hardware is amazing. To me, the beautiful thing about an amp modellers/multi fx is not just using them for guitar. They are a GREAT swiss army knife. Just my two cents🌟

Quad cortex isn’t just about the sounds, it’s got so much more that make it great for live performances. I can have 4 separate preconfigured signal chains each with 4 modifiers, all available with at the click of a foot switch. The switching is fast and reliable. I don’t have to think about it or even try to read the screen. It’s all positional. Other similar kits have fewer switches with less configurability requiring external midi switches that lag and fail in weird ways. If you only care about the sound, you probably have a point, but if you care about performing live— especially in a cover band, I’ll take the quad cortex over a massive pedal board every time.

I liked Mix B slightly more, by a hair. It’s a little airier, but honestly, I wouldn’t be able to tell which one was which, so the price difference is fucking ridiculous. Big thanks to all the decent people who don’t see us as walking ATMs.

I feel sorry for Eddie Van Halen, it's absolutely tragic that he died before he could hear the amazing tone I create in my bedroom with a amp sim.

There comes a time when you don’t want to haul 300 lbs of gear and set up mics anymore to play live or record on a hot day. They sound great but the digital gear nowadays is phenomenal. I’m not selling my old rig but I’m not schlepping around that beast anymore unless it’s a major gig.
