Dobermans have soft, hanging ears that fold down close to the cheeks. This is actually normal. The Standing ears are the abnormal one's. When you see a Doberman with straight, upright ears, it is the result of a cosmetic surgical procedure called ear cropping followed by weeks or months of taping and posting to train the cartilage to stand firm.

When he puts his ears down it’s showing submission. Almost like a sign of respect. Looking for guidance from your husband. When his ears are up he is in alert mode. /protection mode.
