I miss Mr. Clicky...SIMPLER TIMES!
As someone that drove a semi at 80k pounds with the foot dimmer switch I can tell you from experience the switch goes bad at the worst possible times due to rain, mud, snow etc
biggest issue with the floor mounted dimmer was the water intrusion causing the switch to fail and usually at the worst time leaving you with no headlights. I have experienced that. Talk about panic mashing until the lights come back.
Not to mention vehicles that lived in the rust belt tended to get salt inside of that switch causing corrosion and bad connection issues, I remember more than one time when my dad went to hit the high beams and the headlights went out.
Do you remember all wrecks caused by the folks that got their feet tangled up in the steering wheel trying to adapt to the swap? Poor dumb bastards. 😅😅😅
I had a 74 F250 that would lose head lights every third tap of that floor switch. It was my first truck that I bought in 1977. It kept me on my toes.
Joysticks make gen z feel more at home while driving 😅
Year into moving them up on the columns auto manufacturers thought they would have to move it back to the floor again,, reason being too many women were getting their leg caught in the steering wheels causing a wreck,,, Old joke.
Had one in my 71 f250 camper special and in my 77 blazer miss the shit outta those.
I converted three 80s square bodies to the floor switch . My 57 Ranchero and 79 F250 still their original floor switches.
I love my Mr clicky in my 89 f250. No hand movement for headlight changes. It does get tough when im turning, shifting and high beams are on but it rarely happens that I don't see anyone at the next road.
Loved those floor switches.
About 1966 the turn signal started lane change feature were you could just put a little pressure on the lever.
Also the high beam switch being on the column was more 'European' and thus better in some people's minds
my '36 Dodge has the exact same Mr. Clicky that we used through the '80s. It's just mounted on the dashboard instead of the floor
City busses use these floor mounted switches for turn signals and brights still..if you ever ride the bus, you'll notice drivers don't use their hands to signal because it's unsafe
One of the problems that auto manufactures created was they loaded about three or more functions on that stalk, causing some problems for drivers who were not familiar with all those functions
Mr. Clicky has big issues especially in the Northeast with salt and snow on your boots. My buddy had an f150 from the 80s with high beams on floor. I had him put an extra one in his glove box as a spare.
Another item you could find in the same spot was a manuel foot pump for the windshield washer fluid. My first car, a 1974 opel manta had it and the blinker/hi beam switch on the column.
