"a hunter doesn't go for the head" and "a competitive shooter would have left his brass for someone else to pick up" are such MASSIVE leap in logic. A hunter will go for the head if they're not trophy hunting, and not every comp shooter is a prick that just leaves their brass everywhere for someone else to clean up, especially if they know no one else is going to pick it up. This is just bad writing that only serves to narrow down the suspect list for the sake of the plot.
