It was a very deliberate choice to wait about a year and a half before they actually stopped the manufacturing of discs, hoping people would forget about it by then. I hope Sony is forever stained by this decision and suffers the consequences that come from it.
Most obscure games never got a physical release. Thats why their statistics say that most people only buy digital
