After 24 years, I'm finally trying to keep the deer out of the garden. This was as much as move to protect the garden as it is an effort to protect our health by trying to reduce the tick population on our property. Unfortunately keeping them out isn't as simple as just putting up a fence when you're dealing with topography challenges, zoning codes and keeping neighbors happy, so I've cobbled together several methods of exclusion. We’re on our fourth home and have put up three deer fences as one of the first improvements. We tried everything in our first home to protect our beloved garden—to no avail. The biggest we have done is an 8-foot perimeter fence around 10 acres, made with pressure treated posts in concrete and wide hardware cloth. Visually, it disappeared into the background. We ran a beautiful custom wood fence and drive gate along the front of the property to connect the sides. It was a BIG investment but I’ve never regretted it as much as exiting the house in the morning to find all the roses and hydrangeas eaten to the ground (right as they were about to bloom—every time). Great decision!

That $32,000 bid is like the one I got for a 10x10 ft patio...Quoted $26,000 some companies throw those bids because they are busy and don't want small projects. I don't see why they can't just say we swamped and only doing big projects.

Your experience trying to hire a fence contractor is exactly my experience trying to hire any contractors. They may show up to do the walk through, but then never send the estimate. Or don't show. And it's never money related because these are jobs I want to just have done. It's insane and it's the reason why I take on DIY work myself that I really don't want to do.
