This happened in an area known as Dixie Alley. They get a lot of big tornadoes.

I live in Mississippi. I was living in Philadelphia Mississippi when the first EF5 tornado touched down that day. 😢 National geographic just released a documentary about 6 months ago about this day and it is way more in-depth and it follows all the tornadoes. It is told through The eyes of the weatherman on TV that had the burden of warning everyone through four states during this tornado outbreak. 😢

Yes, a downstairs bathroom is good, especially if there are no windows. We were taught to grab a mattress, pillows, blankets, anything you can cover yourself up with and get into the bathtub. The underground pipes help to hold the tub in place. There are some newer homes, in areas where a storm shelter isn’t possible, with a tornado shelter room built into them. Fortified spaces built to withstand the winds but usually above ground, unlike a storm shelter which was often separate from the house itself.

28:00 *"That guy survived...!?"* -- Not only that, but he was live on the air calling in to his coworkers at the weather station; he wasn't just watching it out of curiosity, he was delivering live descriptions of what the tornado was doing and where it was going to help his colleagues and any listeners make more informed safety decisions. During the broadcast (which is preserved in various YouTube videos, of course), you can actually hear the roar of the tornado getting louder in the background of his phone call as it approaches, until he finally says he can't stay on any longer and has to cut the call and run for shelter in his house (he was unable to get to his dedicated storm shelter on the other side of his house before running out of time when the tornado reached him).

They typically only occur and become visible in the most extreme tornados -- this means that if you see them, it's a very good rough indication that the tornado is extremely powerful and dangerous.

31:02 Getting under a staircase at the center of a first floor is actually a highly recommended shelter location. Staircases tend to be extremely strong. My personal "tornado shelter room" is a small bathroom in the center of my first floor, beneath the staircase.

There is so much land that most strong tornadoes don't hit highly populated areas often

It’s alright, don’t feel bad about feeling bad - if anything, I think there’s something wrong with people who watch these and *don’t* get emotionally affected by the reality. I’m sure they’d feel a lot differently if it were them it happened to.

I cannot recommend his tornado iceberg videoes enough, its a two part set, but both are very cool.

I remember this storm very well. We huddled up in the hallway with my king sized mattress for our 4 tornado warnings. 3 of them missed us, one barely touched us tearing pieces of our roofing and 1 or 2 pieces of siding off the house. it landed about 5 miles later and tore a chunk of the city of Albertville. after the storm was over my parents went to try to find supplies and food, having to drive upwards of an hour one way just to find electricity and on the way the storms were still around, just no tornadoes. one tree fell while they were driving nearly piercing my mom in the passenger seat of the truck. got out with bruises. We was without power for what seemed like forever after that. I think it was a little over a week. Very fortunate with our lives that day.

I was in first grade when this happened. I still remember it very well. The statement about standing on a hill and looking around seeing multiple was accurate. We lived on top of a hill, and the entire back of our house was glass. Over the course of the storm I remember seeing multiple tornadoes out of the back, and when we went to the front door there was another one. After that I just remember staying in a closet under our stairs with a helmet on, and being without power for a long time after the storms
