Big Bird being on the show less is actually a result of insurance. Puppeteers tend to get a lot of shoulder problems from keeping their arm above their heads. This is minimized in short form filming for most of them where they can take frequent breaks and bring the puppet down. The puppeteer in Big Bird however, needs to keep their arm up until someone comes to remove the head from their hand or they crinkle the neck of the costume. This causes health issues when the character is used too much and raises the insurance premiums of the whole show, so he is used sparingly.
