History Fact: During D-Day on Omaha Beach, the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions and companies of the 2nd and 5th Rangers struggled against the defenders. The aerial and naval bombardments missed their targets, leaving the fortifications intact. Seeing the plight of the troops on shore, the US Navy decided to ignore their orders, which was to conserve half their ammunition should the Kriegsmarine appear. Destroyers, like the USS Frankford (DD-497) steamed to within 1,000 yards of the beach. Trouble was, even at this range they couldn't spot targets because the enemy camouflage was still intact. That's when they noticed a Sherman tank on the beach. It lost a track but was still firing its 75mm gun at the bluffs. Figuring the Sherman could see a target better than they could, the Frankford's gunners followed the 75mm. When it impacted on the bluffs, the Frankford's gunners fired a salvo where the shell landed and obliterated an enemy position. The Sherman commander popped out of his hatch, turned, waved at the Frankford, and went back inside. For awhile the Sherman became the destroyer's Fire-Control Party. Similar thing happened to the USS Emmons (DD-457). Watching several Shermans get up a draw, all of their turrets traversed and fired in the same direction. Figuring it must be an enemy target, the Emmons's gunners followed the shooting and fired at, and destroyed, another position. The destroyers were so close to shore they opened up with their 20mm and 40mm anti-aircraft guns, engaging troop formations and even engaging individual personnel. Even the battleship USS Texas got in on the action, steaming within 3,000 yards of Omaha and bringing its main guns to bear. The ships blew through their supply of ammunition, and in doing so allowed troops to get off Omaha Beach.
