These comments make me realise that I should have explained the situation in more detail. I haven't received funding, but I do have the option to self-fund if I really want to because of income from YouTube and your support over the years. If I self-funded, however, it would change the way I approached a phd. I would be looking to study part-time instead, and likely wouldn’t live in Oxford. I know how lucky I am, and I’m so fortunate that a phd is still on the table even without funding, but it would still impact my decision and whether I decide to take the spot. I should have explained this in the video and acknowledged the privilege of my position, and I didn't mean for this to be an omission. It was only meant to be a quick update and I wish I'd said this in the video. I’m saying it now just so I’m not being misleading! hey ruby! i doubt you'll see this but i watched you a LOT when i was in year seven. back then i was very anxious and quietly studious and your videos provided such an amazing relief and guidepost in that there were people like you out there and not everything had to seem so big and scary. now i'm approaching my gcses and remembered your channel and you're helping me so much to focus on my studies while also prioritising my wellbeing - so much so that i'm predicted mostly grade eights and nines! i've grown into myself so much more now but you've always been such an inspiration for me and i just wanted that to be known. also congratulations! x

Oh Ruby!!!!!! Congratulations on the PhD offer! I’m so so happy for you! Regardless of how the funding goes, you have accomplished such a great feat. Applying and being accepted is a huge deal!!! You should pat yourself on the back and I hope you’re proud of how far you have come because I sure am! I had no idea you were a first generation student. It makes this accomplishment and your entire journey even more special. Navigating academia on your own is one of the hardest things (I’m also first gen from the states! in physics of all things 😭) and you’re doing it so well ❤️ Also, what a magical video! There’s something about these nature shots and you frolicking about that makes me want to move to the English countryside haha. Your recent videos have been so high quality! I’ve been studying physics and learning about Newton for years but have never come across this Waste Book idea. It is intriguing and I think I’ll look more into it after this. Thank you for sharing that with us :) Best of luck with everything Ruby, can’t wait for more vids. (Would you ever consider doing a short “what i eat in a day” video? Ahh, waiting on funding suuuucks!! I remember waiting and waiting to hear back for my PhD - and now I'm waiting on funding again for my studies now too! It's like, you have the place and you want to start preparing, but you don't know if you can actually go yet, so you're stuck in this limbo space until you get confirmation...But!!! Congratulations on getting a place, and I hope you hear positive news soon for funding!

Well done on the DPhil acceptance. Back in the 1990s when I did my PhD, the national funding scholarship results never came through until late summer. Mine came through, (and other people's in my 'year') in the September. That was from the British Academy - now dealt with by the AHRC. The time scales may have changed since then, but usually they are waiting on summer degree results for the final decisions. Although yes, decisions can get held up because, certainly back in the day, people applied for national funding, got the offer of an Award, and if their parents were wealthy enough to self-fund, it was then politely turned down. Like a silent code of honour. So the Award offer was on their CV and background. And then someone else got the funding offer. But again, things may have changed, and certainly funding awarded from individual universities, which is always the next level down to the national level, even with Oxbridge, will have their own time frames, but that again is usually dependent on the National Research Council funding decisions.
