When I had turned 18, I had a spontaneous pneumothorax. I was in three different hospitals over the span of 6 months and after all the X-rays, surgeries, time within the hospital, my bill was about $100,000. I didn’t have insurance, because I had just became an adult just a month prior. For five years, they tried to garnish my wages, take my property, and ruin my credit. I declared bankruptcy for the medical debt, and I am happy to say I’ve come out the other side. Bankruptcy is not always the option, but I would say for medical emergencies you absolutely should, because they will still try to ruin your life.

I recently got served by a hospital and now my wages are being garnished for a seizure I had in 2022. I’ve never heard of this happening to someone besides me. Guess I’m incredibly unlucky.
The hospital where I live doesn't send the bill to you, they send it to a credit bureau & they file against you in small claims court. EVERY SINGLE TIME they will garnish your wages if you don't pay. Quad City Corp is the name.
That’s not true, hospital in town where I live sent my debt to a debt collector, and then they started to garnish my wages.
In my experience most medical places are willing to work with you to develop a payment plan.
Medical debt is such a joke in the US
A medical office sent me to collections a month after my appointment because I didn’t pay immediately.
Not true. For medical debt we got sued within less than 5 years of the billing and missing less than a year's worth of payments. The hospital hired an out of state law firm that is so predatory that I was threatened with arrest (for a bill under $5000). We had to get a lawyer before they would actually file the paperwork for our payment plan.
So medical debt has little to no impact. But does have a significant impact on getting essential stuff like cars, homes etc. and the most logical route is to "just" declade bankruptcy. And it's just so easy to do. Because that's a normal thing people should consider?
Caleb, there is an exception. You should always pay medical bills from Academic hospitals aka those linked to medical schools. They’re always aggressive in chasing after medical debt. For example UVA and VCU sued thousands of patients for medical debt. With one person they’ve sued owing just $13.91. Yes the cost of a Big Mac meal. They’ve also been known for putting liens and seizing property and forcing foreclosures. They’ve only stopped in recent years because of the bad publicity. Since you know they’re publicly funded.
US medical insurance is the largest ever legal, federally approved extortion racket known to man. Anyone who doesn't see that, or somehow think the US healthcare system 'works', is genuinely lost on me. Make you pay for cover, then make you pay a solid percentage of your bill anyway, and thats if you don't have your claim rejected and end up at 100% of the nonsensical hyper-inflated bill anyway
I've been telling people this for years.Don't put yourself in a hole and do without to pay a medical bill., it never hardly shows up on your credit.Ever known people with great credit that never paid a medical, they didn't have a lot of money.So they knew they couldn't pay it's crazy

It impacts trying to get a mortgage
