I just googled it and it turns out that not the whole caterpillar is resolved but vital structures like breathing tube and nervous system remain. This clip draws a rather wrong picture of the process.
I remember there was an experiment conducted where a caterpillar was exposed to a substance and when ever it came in contact with the substance it would receive a mild electrical shock to hurt it. When the caterpillar turned to a butterfly it was exposed to the same substance and the butterfly avoided contact with the substance, remembering that contact would mean pain.

I once opened a cocoon and found the soup. This finding led to the death of one of my dnd characters later. They were bitten by zombified mosquitos and were undergoing a metamorphosis and this was cut open by one of the other players to "save" them. Soup poured out and a combined soup poured out. He was a slime btw. Already reincarnated after eating a bunch of jars in someone's old medicine cabinet. Don't trust your friends folks.
