Because the attacking player was already inside the small square before the ball was kicked from open play, they committed a foul the moment the ball was struck. If the referee spots this, they will award a free out to the defending team, regardless of whether the ball was outside the square when the attacker actually caught or touched it.

I agree that it was a penalty and that the ball didn't cross the line. Remember, all of the ball has to be over all of the line for it to be a goal, it wasn't and therefore it isn't. The square ball was a square ball and shouldn't have counted. Having said that, Dublin's first 2 pointer came from a free that I thought was very harshly moved forward and Niall Scully should have recieved a red card rather than a yellow for striking two players in the face. The idea that Dublin were robbed just doesn't hold up to proper analysis in my opinion. Kerry were marginally the better team

taking out a player in the box like that with a very high hit aswell IS a penalty. the dubs just keep coping harder and harder. the second goal didnt kill off the game, dublin couldn't deal with kerry quality and energy after it. dublin didnt show the minerals that we've seen from the likes of louth that fight harder in adversity. serious questions were asked of dublin after that goal and they couldn't respond strong. better team in the final
