I heard a mountain lion cry when I was alone in the dark in the country. One of the most genuinely horrifying things you will ever hear. I immediately knew exactly why our ancestors believed in devils and evil spirits.
I live in the mountains of Montana. I've been bluff charged by grizzlies twice. The number of people who wander around unarmed, without a clue in large predator country is astounding. I had to participate in two grizzly attack recoveries -- in one of them, their bear spray canister had bite marks. Large caliber is the only equalizer.
It is absolutely terrifying when you KNOW there is a mountain lion, but I can't imagine the horror of being taken surprise by one.
