I was born in Germany, raised there, and lived there until my mid-20s - I live in the US now, but I still visit family and friends often. In this video, I take you on a real tour inside German homes to show you how Germans actually live, not the tourist version. You'll see the German bed setup up close: two separate single mattresses pushed together (yes, with a gap in the middle), two separate duvet covers instead of one shared blanket, and no top sheet - often called a "sleep divorce." I also show why most Germans use large wardrobes (a Kleiderschrank) or a built-in wall unit (Schrankwand) instead of a walk-in closet, what a Windfang entryway is and why everyone takes their shoes off there, and Germany's serious approach to recycling - compost, Wertstoff (recyclable plastics), paper, and glass, all sorted separately. Plus a look at why Germans actually use their backyards and gardens instead of just decorating them. If you want to see more on how German homes differ from American ones, I've got a video with 1.2 million views comparing the two side by side linked above. Let me know in the comments if anything here surprised you I read every one, even if I can't reply to all of them. 📔 My NEW Sourdough Book: https://amzn.to/4fISh3L ➡️ My Signature Sourdough Course: https://supersimplesourdough.teachable.com/p/super-simple-sourdough ➡️ Some of these links are affiliate links. I like these split Mattresses...helps with better sleep because you don't feel your partner moving around so much
I loved this! My husband and I have been married for 53 years, and for 53 years we have fought over our bed and the queen size covers on it. He tends to keep inching them to him and rolls himself into them like a burrito. Meanwhile my backside is hanging off my side of the bed with no covers, and I ofter awake cold in the middle the night. Also he loves a very soft mattress and I could sleep on a board. What a perfect solution you Germans have!
My husband is half German and we were also stationed at Spangdahlem AB, near Bitburg. I loved getting to know his German family and living there for four years, we still use single duvets, recycle everything and just last night, I made Wiener schnitzel and fried potatoes. Germany has stolen my heart ❤️
Married in 43 years. We have split bedrooms, each with double bed. This is the most perfect solution.
The Japnese put their shoes out before entering the house. I think it’s a great idea.
I cannot stand to sleep without a top sheet. To each their own, but I want a top sheet.
Growing up in Germany recycling was not a thing because most things didn't come in plastic. I fondly recall yogurt in glass jars.

Many of these features are famliar across Europe, though surprising to North Americans. We can learn from each other. 🙂
I never could sleep without the gap! It is my bed and my husband lies next to me in his bed. He has his own blanket , too.
I did this and my relatives noticed and acted like I was weird. I was sick and tired of all the blankets stolen off of me! When his snoring got worse, I moved into another bedroom. I needed my sleep, and worked full time! Europeans are smart when it come to sleeping.
We were prior military from the USA stationed in Bamberg, Germany, in 1983. We lived in a small town, Gaustadt, in a German high rise apartment building for nearly 4 years. We could have had military housing, but we didn't want to live there, we wanted to live in a German town amongst the lovely and friendly people. I loved it! Everything you spoke of was in the furnished apartment our landlady provided. We were originally from Ohio. The people, food, the buildings, scenery, were just awesome and wonderful. I did cry when we were stationed to come back to the USA because I felt so welcomed in a country that was not my own but felt a part of its culture, while living there. It was a wonderful experience for my husband, myself and our son to live through. Thank you for such a nice video I plan to subscribe and enjoy more of them! Danke! :) 💖💐
I lived in Germany for 42 years. The list is long ouf the things I really miss. I grew up with bare feet US, but now have Haflinger haus schuhe for winter ad Birkenstock for summer. Sooo miss the tilt in widows and rollanden. Now in the south and use my blinds to help with the sun like a rollanden- best I can. My niece was here last month and was remembering the Salz we used to buy from Bad Reichenhalle. She put it on everything as a kid after she visited me in Germany. We found some online and now I'm using it again- LOL it is always the small things. Great Video
I absolutely love these vids. I live in the UK but my bestie is German and I have go there for work quite a lot too. I've picked up so many German habits from her (Including the breadboards!) Love to visit KaDeWe and Manufactum in Berlin. And I find German supermarkets like Edeka just as fascinating (there is one at Munich airport and I stock up on stuff just before a flight home 😂) I think the way other countries live - especially the practical differences like the bed and the windows - is really interesting as we can all learn something. Thank you for posting. Safe travels.
I first came across the separate duvets in Denmark and thought it was a great idea as no tug of war with the duvet in Winter with my husband so going to use this method in future in Ireland. Thankyou 💚
I am German and have lived in the UK since 1997. I wish I had a bed with 2 separate mattresses again. Here we have one mattress, one size Double duvet or small double, or king-size, depending on the size of your bed. I also miss the way you open windows in Germany to the inside, so much easier to clean. Other than that, I am very happy living in the UK.
"Besucher ritze" is the matress split called !
Very sensible. I know many couples that sleep apart. We say that we can visit anytime. My husband was very restless and I couldn't sleep being bumped awake. My brother is a bad snorer so my sister in law has a spare room if she can't sleep.
Oh, how I miss the European windows, shades, and shutters!
I was married for 48 yrs before I lost him to Covid in 2020. Spent every night in the same bed. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Miss his presence I even now.
