As a fellow newcomer to black flag, I appreciate this review more than others that might be overly nostalgic about it.
Props to the Black Sails reference. Absolutely incredible series.
I didn't even knew they removed all the "modern day" stuff. That's actually huge, that was just a waste of time, now I will be able to sail the high seas without interruption.
That weird gray/tan filter being gone makes the game pop so much more. The water is actually blue now lol.
The criticisms for the new missions and cutscenes further solidifies the fact that modern ubisoft is entirely incapable of delivering the same quality in writing and cutscenes like they used to, this does not bode well for the future and has me concerned for the next entry. though I do appreciate everything else.
Legends said that a "Recommend" Assassin's Creed review from Skill Up channel doesn't exist.

I think there's a deeper meta narrative to the removal of the modern day meta narrative yeah, you were a game dev in the original. You could thus argue that this remake is the released in universe game. is that the actual intent? probably not, but it's a fun head canon imo.

This is the review I needed. Someone who hasn’t played the original. Most reviewer’s played the original complaining about what’s in or not in. I don’t care. Refreshing to see a clean perspective without the nostalgia. Just is the game good or not.

Black sails is so good, Luke Arnold's performance in the last few seasons is incredible.
Now if they could do THAT for ACII & Brotherhood combined, it would be a dream !

Its very telling that the new sections not written by the original writer are disappointing. Despite this game seeming great, i will still probably skip the next mainline game
11:00 yeah the modern day part of BF was a snooze fest. I know they wanted to integrate and continue the First Civ narrative and Roberts' part in it. But tbh, every cut to modern day felt like an unwelcome intermission and everything would've flowed perfectly fine without it.
A bit of a shame that Ralph skipped this one, but learning the opinion of a newcomer also has its merits.
