A new indie brand who were called out for using generative AI on their new launch palette couldn't handle the feedback! The owner said some really crazy stuff, embarrassed themselves, and now the brand is GONE! Hopefully forever! Check out @teresamulhern here!!! I am so happy to see AI becoming a deal-breaker for more people.
i havent watched this entire video, but the use of AI in creative spaces are becoming normalized. Books, Art, and now makeup artistry. The amount of AI makeup ive seen on ig reels is crazy. Protect human art!
Not to mention the mega data centers for AI consuming our natural resources and driving up the cost of electricity. AI is junk 😡
I've never understood why a business that is based on creativity and artistic expression, would be interested in generative AI, when it's so destructive of actual creativity and artists. So disappointing...
AI ads already cheapen a product to me, but having AI slop on the palette (even if it wasn't dropshipped) is so beyond that. You think I wanna look at that every time I do my makeup?? Ew.
if you can’t even pay an artist for a cover art, how am i to believe you pay for good ingredients or even pay your staff? 🤨
If they don't pay creatives to design and market their products, why would I assume they pay the creators that promote their products or that their products are trustworthy?
Could also apply to Tati’s “juice.” That promo video was absurd!
AI has been forced on us all
AI aside there's absolutely no way they're trying to start a brand and are talking to people like that ON THEIR BRAND ACCOUNT. Even if they didn't taint their reputation with AI slop, to talk so unprofessionally as a brand would have.
It’s crazy to say “this is why I use ai, because it’s easy/quick/cheap,” because then WHY should we pay you for it?? The artwork on your palette clearly has no value to you, and therefore it has no value to your customers.
I think what sticks out to me about the attitude that brand owner has is that it made me immediately assume they dont care about makeup and theyre trying to get the fingers into the crazy high profit margins that makeup sales have. People who love makeup KNOW that it is an art form. Also, most people really into makeup are creative people who have other creative hobbies.
Oh my goodness - thank you so much for mentioning me - I just knew it was a topic you'd feel strongly about - and I'm SO glad that you pointed out the issues with using AI. I get so frustrated seeing people generating silly pictures of "this is what my dog would look like as a human" - please don't - you're destroying the planet, wrecking your brain - let's just not please. And thank you for being such a sweetheart!
I hate how all the businesses around me use AI for social media advertising. They all look the exactly the same and you can’t tell similar businesses apart at a glance.
Do business owners ever stop to think about who is going to buy their products when AI steals half the population’s jobs?
Just by reading the title, I miss the days when AI wasn't a thing lol. Honestly when brands use AI to advertise their products I just don't want to buy it as it isn't appealing. Btw the purple eyeshadow is stunning 🥹
another thing about using AI for marketing is that you just can't trust that the product you're seeing even exists
Speaking purely from a visual merchandising perspective, a weird red flag besides the AI is that they’re advertising their “space whale” themed palette with seemingly wholly unrelated set dressing. I would expect fluffy cotton fake clouds, pearls, seashells, stars, moons, starfish, and other aquatic props but instead we have …blueberries, blueberry cheesecake, vanilla ice cream, lavender macarons and baby’s breath? I can understand using desserts to market a palette, but these don’t have any whiff of “space” or “whale” to them.
For people who don't understand how generative AI is art theft: it's literally going to a museum, cutting up the artwork and making a collage. If the training was done with the artists' consent it would be prints being used for the collages. I know otherwise sensible people who argue that genAI is "accessibility for people who can't do art themselves" and it's infuriating. And I really understand the people wondering if the whole thing is ragebait, because it seems so absurd to dig in your heels like that.
I saw a story that an AI actress will be starring her first lead role 🤦🏻♀️😡 What in the actual hell is happening?!
