Imagine you forcibly send a dude to space against his will and with no training on a suicide mission with a micro chance of success, and than he's the first person to make contact with intelligent alien life, understand them, befriend them and team up with them to literally save the universe.
Him learning/understanding Eridian speech makes me so emotional

For once they made a movie I thought was too short! I could have easily enjoyed another 45 minutes of Rocky and Grace hanging out

I highly recommend reading the book. They did SO MUCH for him so he can survive on their world (like the bio dome, a wave maker to simulate waves, dio engineering food he can eat, the air he can breath etc) all out of thanks for saving their species and sharing knowledge.
Give me 10 minutes mini episodes of Grace's transmissions to earth and their reactions to them when they see them
I like that she finally smiles; her character rarely did that in the movie. She must feel vindicated because not only has she been right in believing in him (the last thing she told him before putting him under); it's also that she has sent the first ambassador to an alien species withput actually knowing it! I think she also knows he's happy and he has found his place because she always felt guilty about forcefully conscripting him.
On my 2nd watch, I noticed that the first time we see Grace, he's utterly dishevelled (unshaven, greasy hair) and literally doesn't know which way is up. He also doesn't have an identity - he couldn't even remember his name. He has tubes sticking out of him in some weird orange cocoon. He basically looks like a very lost and confused homeless person, not an astronaut who's been chosen to save the world. But at the end of the movie....in his ending message to Stratt, he's wearing a slick white NASA uniform. Tailored, no less, with shoulder pads - like a business suit, not the typical NASA flight suit. He looks calm, confident and tells Stratt she was right about him. Then signs off as Dr Captain Grace. He DID become the astronaut who saved the world. And on his way to save another.
The ONE thing that would have elevated the movie would be for Rocky to have 'hugged' Grace when he realizes Grace is not leaving at the moment.
Cinema as it should be. Thoroughly enjoyable. Family friendly too.
