When picking your cherries I always put mine in the sink and let them have a good wash because one year we did as you did and ate them from the tree first, then I decided to make jam and put them in the sink only to find a lot of floating maggots, it's up to you but I wouldn't eat them straight from the tree again lol.
She builds benches and bakes cakes too, what a lucky man Mr TCD is.

Hello from Australia: Vicki two suggestions, if it's not too late - workbenches (be they inside or outside ones) should be the height of the principal-users' belly-button. More difficult of course when the two users are different heights! Conventional building STILL has men choosing the height of benches to suit the last's century's idea of 'the little woman' - literally. We're taller than that. (Try asking a kitchen installer to raise the height of a refit and see what answer you get.) And bottom shelves should always be up off the floor high enough to get a broom under it right to the back... (without needing to sweep underneath on your knees with a hand brush.)
