Matt, you should have mentioned why manhole covers are round. Other shapes can fall in depending on the orientation, but a circle can't fall in regardless on how it's oriented.

Lesson time with me! Manholes are also used by other utility services. In the US, we will sometimes run whats called a "diversified ring" infrastructure for telco or power. aka, there is a line running along the poles, and somewhere else, there is an underground run, that both end up at the same place. Useful for services that absolutely cannot fail, i.e. emergency services... In my previous career, I've probably placed over 1mil feet of fiber, both aerial and underground, to connect central offices, businesses, governments, cell towers and homes. Our manholes are a bit different than drainage ones, gotta bring your own ladder. Lots of ventilation required here as well. By far the most interesting method of placing fiber through ducts underground is "jetting". Once all the connections were made with the interduct, we setup a machine that would drive the fiber cable directly through the pipe with caterpiller tracks, and using an air compressor the size of a semi truck, the cable would ride on a cushion of air. We sent it at 186ft/min. We could send it around 5k ft, and if we needed more distance, we'd just loop it up and send it through another jetting machine, and get another 5k ft. Splice loops were super easy, just remove the coupling, radio the guy to send another 100 ft and bang, its there. Pretty crazy. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
