Watching Manuel Neuer finally save the opponent’s fifth penalty to keep Germany alive, only for Jonathan Tah to blast our sixth penalty over the bar, was absolutely heartbreaking. Three consecutive World Cups, three early exits. Even Germany’s once-unbeaten World Cup penalty shootout record has finally come to an end. I became a Germany fan back in 2002 because of Miroslav Klose’s iconic headed goals and front-flips, Michael Ballack’s warrior spirit, and Oliver Kahn’s commanding presence. I’ve supported Germany ever since. Watching that German machine evolve from 2002 to finally lifting the World Cup in 2014 was an unforgettable journey. Their football was smooth, disciplined, and consistently brilliant. Even when they lost, you could still admire the way they played. Now Germany has two extraordinary talents in Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala—the so-called “€100 million twin stars”—yet the team’s overall performances have been deeply disappointing. By the final whistle, I couldn’t help but feel that Neuer probably shouldn’t have returned to the national team. At nearly 40, time has finally caught up with him. It was painful to witness the last remaining member of that legendary generation of the German machine bow out in such a cruel fashion. From 2002 to 2014, that Germany side repeatedly eliminated Lionel Messi’s Argentina, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, and even England—whose Frank Lampard should have had that famous goal awarded. They conquered so many of the world’s biggest footballing powers. Last World Cup, I witnessed Messi finally fulfil his dream of becoming a world champion. This time, I hope either Cristiano Ronaldo achieves his dream, or football finally comes home with England lifting the trophy. Those legendary rivals were part of what made that great German team so unforgettable. Ironically, with Italy—once Germany’s biggest World Cup nemesis—missing three consecutive tournaments, Germany themselves have now suffered three straight early exits. Football truly is unpredictable. The fluent, direct attacking football combined with the legendary German fighting spirit of that era is gone. My disappointment with Germany from 2018 to 2026 runs so deep precisely because I was fortunate enough to witness—and passionately support—that unforgettable Germany team from 2002 to 2014, which will always remain my favourite.
