As a Parisian, I’ve never heard that joke. It’s a distortion of a quote by Guy De Maupassant, who talked about the Eiffel Tower being hated by Parisians at the time of its construction. But Parisians hate the Montparnasse Tower more.

I heard Guy de Mopassant hated the Eiffel tower so much that he would dine at a restaurant on top of the Eiffel tower specifically because it was the only place where he couldn't see the Eiffel tower Edit: Confused him with Hugo -_-
