Riot shield vs viking shield

I was surprised at how well the modern shield held up. I was under the impression they were more for unarmed mobs and would crumple under steel weapons. (To be clear, I was referring to this particular kind of shield that is clearly not ballistic.)

Just enchant your shield with mending, that way it fixes itself after every fight

Fun fact: When Vikings settled disputes with a 'holmgang' - that is, a duel, which would usually take place on a tiny island to provide a natural 'arena' - but the dispute wasn't quite serious enough to merit a 'to the death' sort of setup, they would usually fight to 'three shields'. Meaning, each combatant brought three shields, and whoever broke all three of the opponent's shields first was the winner. So yeah, they were very much disposable... Also, thinking of it now, it was remarkably 'videogamey' - almost like a fighting-game where you have 3 health-bars or something.

To be fair, one is for handling (mostly) unarmed civilians, while other is designed to fight wars. But overall, surprised to see how well riot shield held up.

Well, it's a riot shield, those are usually for protection against blunt weapons and crowds. The "bullet proof" ballistic shield used by police/military are heavier but designed to stop actual gunshots, some up to rifle rounds.

One thing to keep in mind is the heavier sheild absorbs more of the impact force.

Silly eyewear is infinitely cooler than risking damage to your eyes.

I love that the Viking shield held up so well against many weapons I’m pretty sure they didn’t even have in the Viking period haha (Guys stop giving me history lessons in the comments I more meant that a lot of these just weren’t used by Vikings not that it was impossible to make them 😭)

From what I can tell the wood shield had better stopping power against projects since they're primarily designed to block arrows and while the riot shield was deflecting blows better, more of the melee weapons were getting stuck in the wooden shield so you could probably disarm a lot better thx to that
