Here in the states they say after the first 48 hours the chance of a missing person being found alive drops like 50% or something. That's what the show "The first 48" is based on. It's a good show if you like true crime stuff.

So, when I was 19 (prime serial killer age) my car broke down on a highway where there was no street lights or house lights. Pitch black. I was 15 minutes (by car) from the nearest town and it was 2:30am. The town is in the Mt Hood National Forest. I was so scared because there was no traffic, except the occasional car. I was terrified. I laid down in my front seat and literally cried. Then I heard a knock on my window. There was this guy, mid 30’s standing there. I cracked my window and he asked if I was ok. He offered me a ride to town. He drove an orange VW Thing (if you know, you know). I accepted and kept my hand on the door handle. He kept his word, obviously. The opening of this video reminded me of the scariest time of my life.
If I’m not mistaken this is about the guy who called himself “whips and chains” and he went all across the country kidnapping women in his truck and did all sorts of things to them before “discarding” them. There was also another trucker serial K that would stop in a random town and break into a random house and K someone and then leave and go back on his route across country. It took them forever to catch him. I find him even more terrifying than whips and chains because he targeted women of the trade or a woman in a gas station or something. The other guy you just may wake up from your sleep to him with no warning or reason at all. Absolute nightmare material.

These types of serial killers are the most terrifying, because they so easily disappear among everyone else and you could be standing right next to them and never even know the kind of person they really are. They even smile like they generally mean it even though they are practically dead inside. Serial killers with families scare me more than the crazy nutcases that you know are killers.

35:40 You are correct, the first 72 hours are the critical time. Statistically 3/4s of all missing persons are recovered in the first 24 hours. After 72 hours investigations tend to go from active to long term investigations..
